Mizuki Shigeru Road Mizuki Shigeru Road

Mizuki Shigeru Road

The home of the Japanese hobgoblin is not far away from JR Sakaiminato Sta. The hobgoblins started to live in Sakaiminato city after the fishing industry became prosperous in 1993. At that time, in order to add some vigor to the business streets, the hobgoblins which appeared in the works of the local cartoonist Mizuki Shigeru, were made into bronze statutes standing on various business streets. This is the origin on how the hobgoblins entered the city. There are more than 134 hobgoblin statutes appearing at various spots along the approximately 800-meter street. Along with the statues there is also the Yokai Shrine, the Yokai Plaza, the Spring of the Kappa, the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum and other scary but interesting facilities all over. Gegege-no- Kitarō cookies and other desserts that are unique to the area can be bought here and make great gifts for friends and family alike. Stop at JR Sakaiminato Station and you will have arrived.
< Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum >
The museum shows the achievement of cartoonist Shigeru Mizuki who is famous for ""Gegege no Kitaro"",“Akuma-kun”, and “Katsupa no Sampei”. Aside some precious materials related to his masterpieces, the museum also presents the Yokai Collection collected by Shigeru Mizuki from all over the world. What’s more, the diorama showing the Yokai world and the workroom with 3 walls displaying video is an amazing sight.

Mt. Daisen stands 1,709 meters above sea level and is the highest mountain in the Chugoku region. Because its beauty is similar to Mt. Fuji, local people also call the respected mountain ""Hoki Fuji"". Moreover, Daisen was worshipped as a holy mountain by the Nazarites a long time ago and is now been designated as Daisen-Oki National Park. The scenery is beautiful and you can enjoy new buds in spring, going camping in summer, appreciating the red leaves in autumn and going skiing in winter. A new sight is waiting for you just around the corner.

Okashi-no-kotobukijyō

Okashi-no-kotobukijyō

Is a great castle set against Mt. Daisen. In actuality, it is a cake-themed park made by the Kotobukijyō company, which copied Yonago city and was finished in 1993 (Heisei 5). Although an imitation, some of the stones came from the historical remains of Yonago city and it is worthwhile visiting the life-like castle. The sales area is on the first floor and besides Japanese and Western pastries, there are many other specialty goods which make great gifts. If you have difficulty choosing from the great selections, the fruit cake is always a great choice. Fried glutinous pudding with red bean stuffing is also a popular treat. The delicious pastries have won the Honorary President Award from the National Pastry Exhibition. You can also try all kinds of free samples to help decide. There are also pastry- making areas to visit and an observatory to view the beauty of Daisen.
