Utsunomiya Castle
This castle is where Honda Masazumi once lived, a man called the "intelligent general" and the dagger of the Tokugawa Ieyasu era. It is one of seven famous castles in the Kanto area and was built in the Heian Period, but nearly completely burned down in the Boshin War at the end of the Shogunate era. Now it has become a leisurely park frequented by residents. The "Seimei-dai" of the Utsunomiya Castle was repaired in 2007 and is the the most popular attraction here. Built with reference to pictures found in a book dating from the Edo Period, delicate gargoyles, tiles and thickly painted clay walls, make up this reproduction. The bird's eye view of Utsunomiya in the Edo Period, which is exhibited in the archives of the city, will give you more detailed information about the history and development of Utsunomiya.
