Ueno zoo Ueno zooUeno zoo

Ueno zoo

Speaking of representative zoo in Japan, this one is what we are talking about. In the 15th year of the Meiji period, it was opened as the earliest zoo in Japan and is the model of latter zoos. The number of animal is the largest, including birds, reptiles, amphibian and fish besides mammalian animals. You can have a great time with these animals, enjoying their unique ecology and cute gestures. There are two separate parks divided: the Eastern Park and the Western Park, each of them has its own specialty. The one nearer to the station is the Eastern Park, in which there are tigers, lions, elephants, penguin and other popular animals. Don’t miss it when penguins and eumetopias are eating food. After seeing the Eastern Park, you can head to the Western Park, where there are rare reptiles and amphibian animals waiting for you. Besides, the Children’s Zoo where you can make close contact with goat, sheep and deer is strongly recommended for families. The park is very big, you can choose single-track trolley bus if you feel tired. It takes you only 90 seconds to get to the Western Park from the Eastern Park.

Ameyoko

There is a 400 meters’ long shopping street on the western side of the overhead along the JR Okachimachi-eki Station and Ueno-eki Station, which is called the Ameya-yokochou, and more than 400 shops are gathering here. It is said that during the after-war law-less period, many American soldiers opened shops here, which is where the homophonic word “AMERIKA”. At the end of each year, large quantities of people come here and buy food and other goods for the Spring Festival. It is indeed a lively place. Recently, the sale of fresh fish has become a major business as well. Tsukiji market is open only to wholesale merchants, therefore Amerika becomes more popular as it is opened to individuals.
