 Takaoka-daibutsuThe Takaoka Daibutsu, Nara Daibutsu and Kamakura Daibutsu are sometimes referred to as Japan’s three Big Buddhas. The Takaoka Daibutsu's construction was started in 1221 and was originally a 5-meter-high wooden Buddha. It was destroyed by fire and has been repaired many times over the years. It is now a 7.4 meter high copper statue made in the traditional Takaoka manner. It took 30 years to build and was finally completed in December, 1932 (Showa 7). The Takaoka Daibutsu stands 15.85 meters high (with the pedestal) and weighs 65 tons. It is a very impressive sight. Some people claim that this daibutsu surpasses that in Nara and Kamakura with its stylish appearance. Its elegant appearance attracts numerous tourists year round. Takaoka Daibutsu has also become the symbol of bronze capital and manufacturing capital. If you have the chance to visit, it is well worth the trip. ■ Facility information

It was built as Bodhi Temple by Maeda Toshitsune, the third domain lord, for Maeda Toshinaga, the first lord of Takaoka in 1663. It is called Garan Zuiryuji and has many unique features. It is surrounded by corridors, producing a great and graceful charm, and stands uniquely in the world. The national treasure mountain gate, Buddha hall and worship hall should all be seen. A lightshow will be held during the Ullabana festival, highlighting the almost dreamlike view. ■ Facility information

It was completed in 1963 after spending 7 years, with 10 million people working on the project. The film, Kurobe no Taiyō, depicts Yujiro Ishihara as the leading role recounting the drama of the project. Its interesting structure attracts more than one million tourists each year. The clear blue water and the 186-meter-high reservoir is amazing beyond description. Its bold and grand water-drainage display is well worth watching. It's like a rainbow composed of numerous running water sprays flowing in the sunny sky. The best view is from the observation floor, where you can appreciate the full view of the great reservoir and the stretching mountains. Besides the dam, there is also an art gallery and a museum in Omachi, Hakuba and Azumino. Why not come and visit? ■ Facility information
