Sendai Tanabata Festival

Sendai Tanabata Festival

The Sendai Tanabata Festival occurs in early August each year and lasts for 3 days. It is one of the most important festivals of summer in Sendai, the "City of Green". The most interesting part is no doubt the fancily colorful "Paper Wind Flags". About 3000 wind flags made of different colors of Japanese paper decorate the streets around Central Avenue and Ichiban-cho Avenue. The scene that these flags create is truly breathtaking. The whole city is dyed all different colors. During the festival, Jouzenji-dori is the main avenue for the the "Night of Starlight Festival". The residents participate in different programs, such as singing, instrument performances, and the Tanabata dance, depending on their interests. The festival is a convenient trip to take because of its close distance to many Super Hotels. If you wish to take home some wonderful memories from your journey, please come to the Tanabata Festival!

Donto-sai Festival

The Donto Festival is a traditional ceremony that's held in every shrine located in Miyagi prefecture on January 14th of each year. It's said that burning the used decorations from New Year's purifies you and protects your health and safety all throughout the year. The Donto Festival held in the Osaki Hachimangu Shrine is the biggest one in the prefecture. Thousands of residents wrap white hairbands and white cloths around them, hold rice paper inside their mouthes, and carry bells and lanterns, walking on the streets barely clothed. In 2005 (17th year of Heisei), the Donto Festival was appointed as an invaluable folk/ cultural asset of Sendai. The brightly burning sacred flame as well as the courage of the scantily dressed participants both defeat the cold weather and give this ceremony a sacred air.
