Yukichi Fukuzawa Residence
The renowned Yukichi Fukuzawa, whose famous dictum is “It is said that heaven does not create one man above another man”, lived in this residence from childhood to age 19. Born in Kurayashiki, Nakatsu han, Dojima, Osaka City, Yukichi Fukuzawa and his mother returned to their hometown of Nakatsu after the death of his father. In order to learn the disciplines of Western civilization, he went to Nagasaki and stayed there for 18 years, devoting himself to study. In the residence, only the main house for daily life and the study which is reconstructed from the warehouse are preserved. From the tile roof and the cob wall, the traces of Yukichi Fukuzawa’s youth in this residence attract many tourists. In addition, in the memorial hall beside the residence, you can learn more details about the life and achievements of Yukichi Fukuzawa. Many precious relics of Yukichi Fukuzawa and his famous work “Gakumon no Susume (An Encouragement of Learning)” are preserved in the memorial hall. There you can see the portrait of this outstanding figure.
