 Yukichi Fukuzawa ResidenceThe renowned Yukichi Fukuzawa, whose famous dictum is “It is said that heaven does not create one man above another man”, lived in this residence from childhood to age 19. Born in Kurayashiki, Nakatsu han, Dojima, Osaka City, Yukichi Fukuzawa and his mother returned to their hometown of Nakatsu after the death of his father. In order to learn the disciplines of Western civilization, he went to Nagasaki and stayed there for 18 years, devoting himself to study. In the residence, only the main house for daily life and the study which is reconstructed from the warehouse are preserved. From the tile roof and the cob wall, the traces of Yukichi Fukuzawa’s youth in this residence attract many tourists. In addition, in the memorial hall beside the residence, you can learn more details about the life and achievements of Yukichi Fukuzawa. Many precious relics of Yukichi Fukuzawa and his famous work “Gakumon no Susume (An Encouragement of Learning)” are preserved in the memorial hall. ・ Location:Oita Prefecture, Nakatsu City, Rusuimachi, 586 ・ Phone number:0979-25-0063  Nakatsu CastleThe five-tiered tensyu kaku (castle keep) and the two-tiered yagura (turret) are symbols of Nakatsu. Being a famous castle which is quite popular among local residents, Nakatsu Castle is also called Ougi Castle for that the shape of the whole castle grounds resembles an open fan. The daimyo Kuroda Yoshitaka, who governed this region in 1587, began building Nakatsu Castle; and 12 year later, it was completely by the daimyo Hosokawa Tadaoki. Famous for the water level of the moat outside the castle changing with the ebb and flow of the tide, Nakatsu Castle is considered as one of three famous water castles in Japan, along with Takamatsu Castle and Imabari Castle. The castle exhibits are rich in historical value, such as samurai armor and old maps; hence, it is a must-see sight for history buffs. If you would like to take a rest, the plaster walls, white walls, and latticed doors which can be seen everywhere can calm you by offering a silhouette of the scene of the land near the castle as it has been since the Edo Period. ■ Facility information
