The Last Stop on the Narrow Road to the Interior (Oku no Hosomichi)

The Last Stop on the Narrow Road to the Interior (Oku no Hosomichi)

Here is the last place visited on the "Oku no Hosomichi" for Haiku poet Matsuo Basho. Around this area you will find many related attractions and monuments. Walking in this area, people can recall Matsuo Basho's footsteps in those years. What should not be missed here are Watergate River and the remains adjacent to Boat Harbor. At the end of Matsuo Basho’s "Oku no Hosomichi" tour , he sailed down from the Watergate River to the port town of Kuwana. Many buildings and landscapes at that time are still preserved there, including the Sumiyoshi Lighthouse, exuding a strong flavor of the Edo period. If you want to have a deeper understanding of Ogaki or Matsuo Basho ,you can visit the "Oku no Hosomichi Museum" nearby the lighthouse. The museum not only shares the story of Matsuo Basho but also his haiku friend Taniki, as well as valuable insights about the relationship between them and Ogaki. In addition, there is a walking promenade from the Sumiyoshi lighthouse to the Sumiyoshi shrine with a stone memorial inscribed with Matsuo Basho’s famous poems. In this atmosphere, you feel as if you are starting a journey to Oku no Hosomichi.

Ōgaki castle

Ōgaki castle

This castle is famous for becoming the headquarters of the Western military Ishida Mitsunari during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. After the Battle of Sekigahara, after Ishikawa, Santo Matsudaira dominating the castle, Toda families began to enter the city in 1635. From that time to the Meiji Restoration, this castle had been the home of Toda families along with the common development and prosperity of Ogaki. This castle is famous for being fortified with four layers and four floors. The existing castle tower was rebuilt in 1959. Although it is a renovation, it has been faithfully reproduced as majestically as the original, and is designated as a national treasure. The beautiful modeling is given high praise by visitors. You can also enter the castle tower itself. Inside is the museum of the Sekigahara battle. Overlooking the Sekigahara mountains from the top floor observation deck, your thoughts may wander back to the warring states of yester-year.
