Sakura (Koriyama Castle)
The history between Nara and sakura blossoms is long. It is believed that even in the Manyo period people had already started the custom of cherry blossom viewing. Thus, there are numerous famous spots for sakura viewing . If you want to truly experience wonderful cherry blossoms while you are in Yamato-Koriyama, then please visit Koriyama Castle. The castle was constructed by Tsutsui Junkei and the Toyotomi clan. And, Yoshiyasu reigned over this region until the Meiji period. Starting from the 36th year of Showa, a memorial ceremony has been held yearly for the castle when the sakura are in full bloom. Those who appreciate sakura come in great numbers and turn the castle's grounds into a bustling community of tourists. Shidare-Zakura, or the Latin prunus subhirtella var.pendula, is considered by many to be the most attractive variation of sakura. In the east corner of the castle grounds, cherry blossoms spill out from the trees' branches, memorizing spectators. And, when the lights are lit at night, the sakura bathe in their glow. It's simply beautiful—a definite must-see!
