Yakushi Temple

Yakushi Temple

The Yakushi Temple was built under the command of Emperor Tenmu as the headquarters of the Hosso Buddhist sect. It also is one of the older temples that represent the city of Nara. However, several natural disasters and a war in 1528 destroyed all but the east pagoda. Later on, through the generous support of donors, most of the temple was repaired. The Yakushi Temple has been designated as a World Heritage Site due to its historical and architectural significance. There are too many places to be counted that are worth visiting inside the Yakushi Temple, but out of them all the east and the west pagodas are tourist favorites. The Golden Hall of the east pagoda is where the national treasures, the “Three Statues of Yakushiji,” are located. These are considered to be masterpieces of Buddhist art and are definite must-sees.
