Nagoya Castle
Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered the construction of the Nagoya Castle after the Edo and Nijo Castles were built. It was completed in 1612. The castle's design of surrounding the central tower and inner court with corner towers is not only secure, but also looks magnificent. And, as the home of the Owari Tokugawa clan of the Tokugawa family, Nagoya castle had seen many years of prosperity. However, because of an air raid in 1945 (Showa 20), the central tower and inner court burnt to the ground. The castle tower was later rebuilt in 1959 (Showa 34). Most of the castle, however, including the famous Golden Killer Whale, survived and retained the same dignified and lustrous appeal that they always had. Another 3 side-towers and the castle gates were left unscathed by the disasters that struck the castle. When looking at the castle, you can can see the exquisite fortification skills that were used in its construction. There is an exhibition room in the castle tower where you can experience the history of Nagoya through a lifelike 3-D movie depicting the daily life of the castle town at the time.
