Kushiro Shitsugen National Park

It is a national park, occupying most of the area of Kushiro Shitsugen. A variety of tours are available, or you can feel and see the charm of Shitsugen on your own. For example, if you want to view the green scene of Shitsugen, then the Hosooka Viewpoint is considered the best spot. Shitsugen has embraced the curved snake-shaped Kushiro River and it show its majesty year round. A good place to start is of course the Onnenai visitor centre. There is a 3.1 km-long walking promenade to enjoy and if lucky, you can see Tancho zurus(Japanese red-crested white crane), squirrels, giraffes and other wild animals.

Tancho zuru National Park

It is a unique park which aims at protecting and breeding the endangered species of tancho zuru, the Japanese red-crested white crane. All 8 cages within the facility are open-roofed, allowing the tancho zuru to basically live wild. You can closely observe the tancho zuru pecking the river, parenting and all other normal living habits. Sometimes you can see the graceful bearing of the tancho zuru when it takes a stroll down the road. The program to help has been showing great success, allowing the visitors to watch the cute fledglings year after year.
