 Harimaya BridgeA tragic play was created about the love affair that occurred on this bridge between Chikurin-Ji monk Jyunshin and his lover Oba. The Yosakoi Festival is also held on Hariyama Bridge. Now the area surrounding the bridge has been rebuilt as a park and an historic site to commemorate the rich merchants--Harimaya Sotoku and Guimaya Dosei of the Edo period. Yosakoi not only adds a beautiful youthful expression to the summer of Kouchi, but also to the whole country. The coloured truck takes the lead and behind it, the dancers are dancing with the music playing on the truck while participants chant energetically. It was first constructed by the first generation Kutosa Hanshu Yamauchi Katsutoyo and completed by the second generation Hanshu Chugi in 1611. It was burnt down by a large fire in 1727 and rebuilt in 1753. Thereafter, it has suffered many disaster and wars, but has been preserved until today. The most attractive place to visit is the center part of the castle which has retained the renovated styles and features. There is a vast collection of precious treasures of Japan at that time in the main hall of Tenshukaku. The castle is reputed as precious cultural heritage.
