Meriken Park

Meriken Park

Is a waterfront park that enjoys a cool sea breeze. The swaying trees and the waterside walkways, as well as the remains from the Great Hanshin Earthquake, all emphasize the leisure atmosphere of Kobe Park. There are two landmarks within the park, the Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum. Even after dusk, with the street lights in bloom, the views are amazing.
Kobe Port Tower - Is the symbol of Kobe Port and stands 108 meters tall. It is a compelling sight as it is made of red steel. On the fifth floor is an observation deck, 91 meters above the ground, that gives a commanding view of not only Kobe Port but also the Rokko Mountains. Sitting in the open tea room, with the view all around, is one of the greatest sights in Kobe.
Kobe Maritime Museum - The roof of the museum is distinctive as it is designed to symbolize the sails of sailing vessels crashing through the waves. It is full of 3D images and models of the history of Kobe Port. In 2006 a new section opened, with life-sized displays of bullet trains and helicopters, creating an amazing sight for visitors.

Walking along the long ramp way to the north from JR Sannomiya station, you will find a picturesque group of Western-style builds and churches, as well as Ijinkan street with many Chinese temples. During the Meiji period, after the opening of Kobe Port, many foreigners moved into the area. As such, there are many scenic spots designed with a foreign flavor. The most representative is the old Thomas residence, which is also called Fengjian Chicken Museum. It was built in the 42nd year of the Meiji period by a German businessman, Mr. Thomas, and the spire-like Fengjian chicken has since become the symbol of Kitano Iijankan street. The uniquely German construction and design is interesting with its start contrast to the traditional Japanese.

One of three Chinatowns in Japan, the other two are Yokohama and Nagasaki, it is 270 meters long from east to west and 110 meters long south to north. Although its scale cannot equal that of Yokohama, the exciting atmosphere is the same. The distinctive Chinese food shops, grocery stores, and small food stalls crowded along the street receive many local and visiting customers. There are huge number of visitors every day, who appreciate the exotic flavors and the snacks bought from street vendors. There are also many celebrations during the Chinese Lunar New Year Spring Festival, from the end of January to early February. There are Dragon Dance performances, Lion Dances, acrobatics and more. If you can, make sure to visit during the festival and enjoy all the amazing sights and sounds.
