 Tanuki-koTanuki-ko is a man-made lake situated on part of the Asagiri plain. It is a famous sightseeing spot that captures a full view of Mt. Fuji. It attracts a large number of tourists. When you look out over the tranquil lake surface, you will see the majestic Mt. Fuji right in front of you. Exuberant cherry blossoms and azalea symbolize the four seasons, too, just like a beautiful landscape painting. The inverted reflection of Mt. Fuji on the lake surface adds a hint of mysterious beauty. Tanuki-ko is also a famous crucian carp fishing spot in Japan. The fishing season is from April to October. Just like the slogan says,“each citizen has a leading role,” all the citizens join in the grand carnival. One of the most wonderful parts is the “Princess Kaguya Picture Scroll” contest because the city of Fuji is the birthplace of her legend. The winner of the contest comes on stage in all her splendor exciting all the spectators. Also, around 4000 citizens dance the samba together, Taiko drums pound and bamboo pole lantern performances happen one after another. The final program is a fireworks show. The big fireworks bursting in the summer night's sky are a perfect end to the festival. ■ Facility information

It flows near numerous mountains, including Mt. Fuji, the Southern Japanese Alps, Mt. Chichibu, Yatsugatake, and other 3000-meter-high mountains, finally emptying into Suruga Bay. The mouth of the river is about 2 kilometers-wide, which makes it the widest river in Japan. Photographers love the riverbed and often take pictures of Shinkansen and Mt. Fuji from it. In spring and autumn, work starts for those in the shrimping business. The sakura shrimp that swim across the riverbed are like a dazzling red carpet.
