Kushida Shrine

Kushida Shrine

Kushida is a shrine in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka. Since ancient times, Kushuda-jinjya (shrine) has been very popular among citizens as the guarding temple of Hakata. Shrine rituals, such as Hakata Gion Yamakasa in July and Hakata Autumn Festival in October, are held at Kushida-jinjya every year. The consecrated gods are Oohata Ookami (god of Kushida), Sun Goddess, and Susanowo Ookami (god of Gion). Oohata Ookami is enshrined in the main hall of the temple, Sun Goddess in the left hall, and Susanowo Ookami in the right hall respectively. The area around Kushida-jinjya was dilapidated during the Warring States Period, and the temple, which is kept to today, was built in 1587 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the revival period of Hakata.

The formal name of the shrine ritual is “Kushida-jinjya Gion Matsuri”; later, it is called as “Hakata Gion Yamakasa” for that the floats carried by the men in the festival are called Yamakasa.
