Heiwa street shopping mall

Heiwa street shopping mall

The "permanent pedestrian road (year round pedestrian mall )" first built in Japan is the Heiwa street shopping mall. This main street starting from JR Asahikawa station and continuing to the north received a lot of attention from all over Japan in 1972 (Showa 47) as Japan's first experimental pedestrian-only shopping mall. It attracts many people as the main street of Asahikawa though its name was changed from Division street to Heiwa street and eventually to Heiwa street shopping mall. There are various shops like departmental stores, all sorts of specialty stores, beauty parlors, Ramen noodle shops etc. standing on both sides of the street and many people or tourists visit this place as a shopping zone or gathering place. This entire street was renovated and transformed in 2002. Not only the fountains, bronze sculptures including "Young Woman" by Sato Churyo" have been installed at intervals on the street but also benches for resting have been installed and has become a street that can be enjoyed from a perspective of culture and art.

Asahi bridge

Asahi bridge

The most beloved bridge among the numerous bridges of many people as a symbol of Asahikawa is the Asahi bridge. There are about 130 small and big rivers including the Ishikari, Ushishubetsu, Chuubetsu running through Asahikawa and over 750 bridges. Therefore Asahikawa is also known as the "District of rivers and bridges". Of all the bridges, Asahibashi (Asahi bridge) is the most popular among people as one of the symbols of Asahikawa. Completed in November 1932 (Heiwa 7), it was built as an important traffic route connecting the south and north of the city, with steel imported from Germany. It is a beautiful arch bridge of 225.4 meter length and 18.3 meter width and trams were running on this bridge till 1956 (Showa 31). This historical bridge is admired as one of the major 3 bridges in Hokkaido for the beautiful curve of the arch bridge and in the afterglow of sunset and river mist in the winter etc. Among these, the Asahi bridge reflected in the afterglow of sunset is really a perfect picture. It was registered as one of the Hokkaidō Heritage sites in 2004.

Goro's stone house

Goro's stone house

The famous long running dramas, 'From The Northern Country' and '89 Kikyo' used this stone house built by Goro Kuroita as the main set in their shows. It is an ecological house formerly built using a large number of stones excavated from Furanodake which is volcanically active. The landscape of red windmills for wind power generation standing alongside can be viewed from the observatory behind the stone house. The house is just as rustic as it looks in the drama series. It is a must visit spot of Furano if you are a drama fan since Goro Kuroita is supposed to be still living in this house.

Biei hills

Biei hills

Biei became famous in 1971, when a landscape photographer returning from a photography trip around Japan accidentally stopped in Biei/Kamifurano hills and was deeply moved by the landscape. Since then he visited Biei continuously for 16 years. Most of the photos taken at that time were not only in photo albums or picture postcards, but also in many posters or films, TV commercials etc. The beauty of Biei thus started spreading in the whole country and 'Maeda Masahiro' became a world famous photographer and opened his photo studio in Biei hills in a closed down primary school and even today makes a great impression on the visitors. Ken and Mary Tree (poplar), Parent and Child Tree (oak), Seven Star tree (oak), Mild Seven Hill (larch), Philosophy tree (modified poplar) etc. are famous. Biei hills spreading over a panoramic scenery is a prominent scenic spot in Hokkaido.
