Nebuta Festival

Nebuta Festival

The three large festivals of Tohoku consist of the Aomori Nebuta Festival, the Akima Kanto Festival and the Sendai Tanabata Festival. The lively Nebuta Festival is also called the World Fire Festival. During August 2nd to the 7th every year, excited festive goers bring a huge lantern (Nebuta) to the central area of Aomori-shi. The short summer in the North is enhanced by a variety of music, like the flute and drum, trumpets and the noises from the small bells worn on dancers' shoulders. They usually wear a robe, bright-color bamboo hats with attached strap and small ringing bells while dancing, a joyful costume highlighting the festive mood.

Standing in the observation area on the 13th floor, you can not only see the full extent of Aomori, but also overlook the Tsugaru peninsula and the mountains in Hakkoda. Recently, the Aomori Park has been built around the Aomori port, where the Seikan connecting boats used to park. On a sunny day, under the blue sky and white cloud, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll while overlooking the azure sea. Beside the port, there is a Memorial for the Seikan connecting boats, which was constructed by rebuilding the old connecting boat the Hakkodamaru. At night, along the Gulf Bridge linking the tourist center and the memorial, all the lights are lit in the gulf area, creating a romantic world.
